The Netherlands plans to expand the LNG capacity of the Gate terminal from 12 to 20 billion cubic meters per year.
Gate LNG is currently operating at 100% capacity and tanker berths are fully booked for the coming months. As an alternative to this decision, the lease of a floating LNG terminal with a capacity of 4 billion cubic meters and its installation at Eemshaven near Groningen is also being considered. Such measures are considered in connection with the continuation of russian military aggression against Ukraine, in order to reduce the country's dependence on russian gas.
The Dutch government plans to reduce production at the Groningen field from 7.6 to 4.6 billion cubic meters this gas year. The country's government believes that 4.6 billion cubic meters will be quite enough this gas year, and the closure of the field in 2023 is still possible, the state secretary of the Netherlands reported.
